How to Clean and Sterilize a Breast Pump

Keeping your breast pump clean and sterilized is essential for the health and safety of both moms and babies. Breast milk is very beneficial for a baby’s health and development, but it is important to remember that germs can grow quickly in milk or on pump parts. New moms already have a lot on their plate, so finding an easy, simple way to ensure your pump parts are sanitized properly can make a big difference.

In this blog, we will walk through the simple steps to clean and sterilize breast pumps, sharing tips and tricks to make the process and the breastfeeding journey as stress-free as possible. Whether your combination feeding, exclusively pumping, at home, or on the go, Maternal By Sentido is here to help with practical advice that seamlessly fits into busy schedules.

Cleaning VS Sterilizing: What’s the Difference? - Cleaning should be done after every use, it removes milk residue and surface level germs, keeping the pump safe and functional. Sterilizing is done less frequently but is still very important. It is a deeper process that kills all germs and bacteria to ensure complete sanitation. This extra step is crucial for newborns, especially those who are premature or have a weakened immune system.

Before Pumping

1. Wash Hands- Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water to ensure that they are clean.

2. Assemble- Put together a clean breast pump, making sure that all parts are dry and free from mold or dirt.

3. Clean- Clean individual parts on the breast pump and pumping area with a disinfectant wipe.

After Pumping (Hand Wash)

1. Use a Clean Container-  Use a designated, clean container that is specifically for washing pump parts. Avoid placing pump parts directly into the sink to prevent exposure to additional germs.

2. Fill Container with Soapy Water- Fill container with hot, soapy water to prepare for cleaning.

3. Scrub with Clean Brush- Use a clean brush designated for infant feeding to scrub each pump part thoroughly.

4. Rinse Parts- Rinse parts under running water or in a separate container filled with clean water to remove any soap  residue,

5. Air Dry Parts- Allow each part to air-dry on a clean dish towel or paper towel in a dirt free area. Avoid rubbing or patting dry with a towel to prevent contamination.

After Pumping (Dish Washer)

1. Check Dishwasher Safety- Make sure that your breast pump is dishwasher safe, you can do this by looking at your manual.

2. Secure Smaller Parts- Place smaller parts in a closed-top basket or in a mesh laundry bag, to prevent from getting lost or damaged.

3. Run the Dishwasher- Add soap and run the dishwasher with hot water and a heated drying cycle if possible

4. Remove with Clean Hands- Remove all items from the dishwasher with clean hands or tongs.

5. Air Dry Parts- If parts are not completely dry, let them air-dry on a clean dish towel or paper towel in a dirt-free area. Avoid rubbing or patting dry with a towel to prevent contamination.

How to Sterilize Breast Pump-

1. Clean Breast Pump-  Always clean pump parts thoroughly before sterilizing, using one of the methods described above.

  • Microwave- Place parts in a microwave safe bag with a small amount of water, leave the bag slightly open, microwave on high for five minutes, and remove items with clean tongs.

  • Boil- Place individual parts in a pot and cover with water, bring to a boil, and boil for 5 minutes. Use clean tongs to remove the items.

  • Dishwasher- If your dishwasher has a sanitized setting, use it to sterilize breast pump.

3. Air Dry Thoroughly- Place sterilized breast pump on a clean dish towel or paper towel in a dirt-free area.  Avoid rubbing or patting dry with a towel to prevent contamination.
